Tuesday 8 July saw the publication of The Bercow Report: Services for Children and Young People with Speech, Language and Communication Needs. The full report and an executive summary are available for download from the DCFS website.
We welcome the report, which recognises that current AAC provision within the UK is fragmented and inadequate. The report puts forward strong recommendations to counter the challenges, including better recognition of AAC within the National Curriculum, the adoption of a 'spoke and hub' of regional provision, the setting up of a national body to oversee the delivery of AAC standards and immediate short-term funding for both ACE Centres.
We are delighted that the approach taken by the ACE Centre in the past is recognised by the review, and are committed to supporting the effective implementation of the recommendations, particularly in the areas of assessment, training and research & development.
