Giving a voice to children who struggle to communicate.

CM Study Days announced

Four valuable AAC study days organised by Communication Matters have been announced. These study days are great ways to update your knowledge on the 'hot' topics in AAC.

"Guess What Happened Today": Enabling Children with Complex Communication Needs to Tell Stories

27 January 2009, London; 28 January 2009, Manchester; 3 February 2009, Edinburgh

Places are still available for this study day which will bring together three well-respected presenters who will discuss the role of story telling within language development, and suggest ways in which story telling (both fictional and personal) can be encouraged and facilitated.

The presenters will be: Dr Nicola Grove (Unlimited Company of Storytellers), Dr Annalu Waller (University of Dundee) and Mr Rolf Black (University of Dundee).

Eye Gaze in Practice

19 March 2009

London Following Communication Matters’ successful Eye Gaze study day in 2008, this day has been designed for people who want to explore in greater depth some of the issues around provision, as well as for those wanting an overview of eye gaze interaction. The study day will include a presentation on the developmental aspects of eye gaze, a chance to try the latest developments from suppliers, presentations by suppliers of eye gaze technology, and an opportunity to hear about and share experiences in the use of eye gaze for interaction. There will also be an exhibition of eye gaze devices.

The presenters will include: Dr Jenefer Sargent (Institute of Child Health), Simon Judge (Barnsley Assistive Technology Team), Tom Griffiths (Wolfson Neurodisability Unit) and Katie Price (Wolfson Neurodisability Unit).

Literacy for All

5 May 2009, London; 7 May 2009, Manchester; 11 May 2009, Dunfermline, Scotland

This study day, presented by literacy expert Dr Caroline Musselwhite from the USA, is for all people working with individuals with significant disabilities who are emergent or beginning readers. A major focus will be on students who use AAC. Strategies will be provided for individuals and students with physical impairments, and those with autistic spectrum disorders.

The day is designed for therapists, teachers and parents working in classrooms and one-to-one situations with individuals such as those described above. The morning session will focus on language, literacy and learning, and the afternoon session will be a workshop on emergent writing.
